A Transformational Photo Marketing Makeover (Stacey Solomon style!)
I’m not one to watch much TV, but I’ve recently discovered the BBC’s home renovation show Sort Your Life Out with Stacey Solomon. And, I couldn’t help but notice a similarity between the show’s decluttering process and the way I approach SEO and marketing with my photographer mentees.
Three simple steps to sorting out your marketing
In case you’re not familiar with the Stacey Solomon TV show, the homes of the families featured are, to put it lightly, a hot mess!
Stacey and her team take stock of the situation and quickly start stripping their homes of all their belongings. They lay everything out in a huge warehouse, organise it all into and then encourage the home owners to sort through the chaos—deciding what stays, what goes.
Once they have performed a massive declutter, they then start reorganising the possessions and furniture back in the family home. But, this time, they return with approximately 50% less clutter and they store things more intentionally. This makes their home, and the space within it, work for them and the families lives are literally transformed for the better.
An essential photo marketing makeover
And the link with what I do? Well, that’s exactly what I guide photographers through in my mentoring programme, The Photographer’s Visibility Blueprint.
STEP 1: STRIP (a.k.a. AUDIT)
Before you can improve your marketing, you need to strip things back and take stock of where you currently stand.
That means auditing — sound dull (I know!) but it’s often a BIG eye-opener!
- What are your marketing goals and key messages?
- Would a first-time visitor to your website understand how you help?
- How much marketing are you doing? Is it enough?
- Where are you showing up? Are these the right channels?
STEP 2: SORT (a.k.a REVIEW)
Then, together we sort—identifying what’s working, what’s not, and where you need to focus.
- Are your current marketing efforts effective?
- Where are the gaps and missed opportunities?
- How well (or not) is your website ranking in Goole? For which keywords?
STEP 3: STORE (a.k.a. STRATEGISE)
The final step? Storing everything in a way that makes sense, so you can market your photography business with clarity, efficiency, and confidence (instead of winging it and hoping for the best!).
- What can you do more of, and do less of, for better returns?
- What are your marketing priorities for the 90 days ahead?
- Which keywords would you like to be ranking for? What content will you create to make that more likely?
A simple marketing strategy for photographers
With clarity on where you are now and a vision of where you want to be, it’s far easier to move forward strategically with your marketing.
I love helping photographers simplify what they are doing, so that marketing feels more enjoyable and less of a chore.
So, if your marketing currently feels like an overstuffed cupboard bursting at the seams, maybe it’s time for an SEO & visibility declutter… Stacey Solomon style! 😉
There’s no better time for a marketing declutter
As a photography marketing mentor, I’m naturally keen for my photography clients to get quick results. Yet, when I first start to working together with a photographer via my Photographer’s Visibility Blueprint programme, I don’t encourage them to rush in and start making tweaks to their website immediately.
My view, based on my experience of working with photographers this past decade, is that many don’t have the foundations of a successful marketing strategy in place. They need to get their house in order first (excuse the pun!).
It’s these important and strategic steps that will help ensure bigger results and longer-term success, and should not be skipped!
